Review: Don't Even Think About It by Sarah Mlynowski

Don't Even Think About It
by Sarah Mlynowski

Genres: Young Adult, SciFi

We weren't always like this. We used to be average New York City high school sophomores. Until our homeroom went for flu shots. We were prepared for some side effects. Maybe a headache. Maybe a sore arm. We definitely didn't expect to get telepathic powers. But suddenly we could hear what everyone was thinking. Our friends. Our parents. Our crushes. Now we all know that Tess is in love with her best friend, Teddy. That Mackenzie cheated on Cooper. That, um, Nurse Carmichael used to be a stripper.

Since we've kept our freakish skill a secret, we can sit next to the class brainiac and ace our tests. We can dump our boyfriends right before they dump us. We know what our friends really think of our jeans, our breath, our new bangs. We always know what's coming. Some of us will thrive. Some of us will crack. None of us will ever be the same.
So stop obsessing about your ex. We're always listening.

This book was like a blast from the past. Everything you loved (or loved to hate) about high school, Don't Even Think About It has it. Though I usually pass over books centered around high school, I'm glad I didn't do that for this one. Though the story is set in a high school, the story will suck you in and not let you go.

The group of students in this book are an excellent bunch to read about. There's enough variety that you'll find someone to identify with. The narrative is from several people's point of view, which was confusing at first. But the writer easily gives each character their own voice. It makes for an interesting read, as you get all sorts of opinions on their predicament.

This story has such a good plot that I've never seen before. The writer did an excellent job of putting out an refreshing plot and cast of characters. Plus, the writing style flowed well and fit this type of story. I would recommend this book to any fan of YA novels set in an actual high school setting.
